Goulandris Museum of Natural History is a public welfare institution, devoted to study, conservation and protection of natural environment. Ever since its foundation it has mapped a pioneer route, a new rapprochement between man and natural environment. It has developed efficient scientific activities for the confrontation and inhibition of environmental threats against the planet and for the rehabilitation of natural resources for the preservation of life. In the meantime, it has formulated a new education of general interest for the re-integration of people into the functions and economy of Nature.
With the responsibility of the Greek geography, the Greeks’ educational space, the Institution develops international activity pursuing our historical and cultural tradition and ecumenical consideration of the world.

Founded in 1965, the Goulandris Natural History Museum is home to zoological, botanical, marine, rock, mineral and fossil specimens. The Gaia Centre for Environmental Research & Education, founded in 2001, provides the unique opportunity to the visitor to get acquainted with Earth, the diversity of its landscapes, flora and fauna, via new interactive technologies, and understand the impact of human activity on the environment.

Every day, hundreds of visitors, mainly school children, are guided and trained in order to develop and increase their environmental awareness. The specialist staff of the Museum and the Gaia Centre guides the visitors through the exhibition areas, providing useful information regarding the creation and evolution of our planet.

The laboratories of the museum focus on gathering, recording and studying botanical, zoological, geological and fossil specimens from the Greek territory. The museum’s collections are thus constantly enriched with new specimens. Moreover, the Gaia Centre includes two state of the art laboratories of Soil Ecology, and Biotechnology and Bioanalytical Chemistry which deal with the research of vital natural resources: soil, water and air, and their impact on human health and nutrition.

The amenities of the museum also include:
• A rich library with extensive scientific material in the fields of environmental sciences.
• Two café-bar restaurants.
• Fully equipped halls suitable for hosting conferences, congresses, seminars and corporate presentations.
