The village of Marmara, once known as the “noble” village, received its name as a result of the multitude of marble decorations that adorned its stately homes and churches. Today it is a characteristic Cycladic settlement with its narrow, whitewashed streets and flowered courtyards. There are a vast number of churches in and around Marmara, all in excellent condition. The Metropolitan Church of the Ascension of the Holy Mother hosts an exquisite wooden iconostasis and dates back to the 17th century. “Aghios Savvas” boasts an impressive bell tower dating back to 1606 and the churches of “Aghioi Anargyroi”, “Aghios Konstantinos”, “Aghia Barbara”. “Aghios Ioannis”, the “Temple of the Metamorphoses” and “Aghia Marina” are also of interest.
