Stenies

Some 5km from Chora, as you drive past Nimborio, you will come across Stenies, a verdant village whose beautiful mansions remind us it was once home to wealthy captains and ship-owners. This is where many ship-owning families, including the Embirikos, Goulandris, Polemis, Paleokrassas, Karastamatis and other families started from. The village is divided in upper and lower Stenies.
On the village main road, it’s worth taking a look at the old fountain with its laundry trough, the Pentavrisso, the primary school, St. Trinity’s Church which is shaded by centuries-old trees and the memorial statue of Embirikos.
Near Kato Stenies you will find the three-storey Bisti-Mouvela Tower, St. George’s Church and the Lion’s Bridge. From there, a stroll will take you to the huge “Fabrika”, that is, the Embirikos’ old pasta factory (it comprised 5 storeys). Nearby sights include a renovated traditional oil-mill and the Agadakis Tower, which was converted into a congress center.
