Ksompourgo Tinos, Greece
Category : SIGHTS
Location : TINOS

In the sheer granite rock of 641m high, there are the ruins of the most significant ancient town in the island and of the Venetian fortress. Xobourgo or Exomvourgo was already populated since the Bronze Age while during Byzantine times it was at its peak. In 1207, when the island was taken over the brothers Andreas and Ieremias Gkizis, they made sure that the former capital of Tinos in the rock was perfectly fortified by constructing the Castle of Agia Eleni. After 1537, the Venetians built a new fortress which endured until 1715-42 when it was destroyed by the Turkish. Since then, it began losing its prestige and gradually it was deserted. Today, from here you will enjoy the magnificent panoramic view while in the Xobourgo base you will watch the catholic worship of the holy Monastery of the Sacred Heart of Christ.
