Gavrio

Gavrio 845 01, Greece
Category : INFO
Location : ANDROS

You can drive in virtually any direction from the port of Gavrio and the main road leading to Batsi and Chora starts from there. A second, smaller road links the north of Gavrio to the Cavo d’Oro area, leading to the villages of Kato Fellos and Pano Fellos, Ammolochos, Mirmingies, Psoriariza, Sidontas, Makrotantalo, Chartes, Palaistou, Frousei, Varidi and Kalyvari, all quaint and worth seeing.
This is where you’ll find some of the island’s most beautiful beaches including Kourtali, Fellos, Pisolimionas, Agios Sostis, Vlychada, Kalamitsi and Pyrgos. Close to Cape Fassa, near the lighthouse towards Cavo d’Oro, you’ll find the two beaches of Peza.
Equally fabulous are the beaches of Zorko, Vitali and Gides, located on the northern coast of the island. The valley of Gavrio is overlooked by the villages of Koumari, Ano Gavrio and Scholi. Driving towards east, you will come across St. Peter, with its Hellenistic tower that once served as a fire beacon.
Looking southwards, the road to Batsi is bordered with long clean beaches, such as the Liopesi and the organized, blue flagged beach of Agios Petros. The exquisite and wind-sheltered beach of Chrysi Ammos (Golden Beach). A little further you will find Kypri and the beach of Agios Kyprianos, so named after the chapel. From Kypri, an asphalt road leads to the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi-one of the island’s largest monasteries.
Gavrio gets quite busy with tourists, especially in the summer months at ferry arrival and departure times. The port is buzzing with taverns, meze places, bars, bakeries, gift and other shops, ferry travel agencies and car/bike rental agencies. Hotels and rentals apartments are available in the area. It is also home to the island’s only camping site.
In Gavrio, you will find a branch of the Agrotiki bank (Agricultural Bank of Greece), as well as Ethniki (National Bank of Greece) and Eurobank ATM cash machines.
If you’re visiting the island in the summer, you won’t want to miss the “Gavriotica” festival, organized every year by the Municipality of Hydroussa (to which Gavrio belongs) in conjunction with cultural societies. The festival covers a wide range of events (for further details) ask for the Municipality’s program). If you enjoy reading, pay a visit to the annual book exhibition (running through July and August) at Logari’s bookshop, where you can also attend books presentations.
