Vikelaia Library, a Cultural Treasure

Vikelaia Library is an important chapter in the Municipality of Heraklion, enhancing the area, not only architecturally but also culturally. Its uniqueness is due to undertaking and planning activities beyond the usual of a traditional Greek library by participating in publishing, in organizing major scientific and artistic events and in systematic collection and research relating to the promotion of historical self-awareness original material. Noteworthy is the creation of electronic library, where taking an excellent advantage of new technologies, Vikelaia Library digitized part of cultural material and put it in the public domain. The visitor can look for books to read, digitized newspapers and Magazines, study the Turkish file and the file of Dimogerontias and discover photos, videos and sounds of the city of Heraklion from the multimedia archival material, without the physical presence in the area.
